Shrinking + Comforting Your Inner Negativity

Visualization: Shrinking and comforting your inner pessimist

Imagine your Inner Pessimist as a child of around 6 to 8 years old. Imagine you are seeing the world and life through this child’s eyes? What is your Inner Pessimist afraid of?

Rather than fighting with, chastising or sending this child to their room, imagine you are comforting them. Give that child the comfort, love and encouragement they need to stop being afraid and to feel safe again.

Imagine the adult you are comforting that child. What do you say? How do you say it?

Ask your inner pessimist – what their message is? Acknowledge this message and let the adult you address these concerns as if you’re a parent addressing the concerns of a child.

Your inner pessimist is scared.

If you’re going to create a life you love, it’s much easier to calm down your Inner Pessimist first. This visualization works because when you comfort your Inner Pessimist, you are lighting up a different part your brain according to medical psychologists. It’s physiologically impossible for your mind to be scared while at the same time generating love and compassion.

Let’s continue to explore.
